The Faience Room
Did you know that Thiviers faience was highly renowned in the 19th century? This craft, originating from the Italian Renaissance, was introduced to Thiviers in the 18th century by Nicolas Dubourdieu.
Often painted in shades of blue, green, and yellow, Thiviers faience became particularly famous for its unique red, a 19th-century innovation derived from an iron-rich stone found in the Dordogne region. The "Red of Thiviers" was developed by Jacques Dubourdieu at the beginning of the 19th century, using siliceous-ferruginou
Around a hundred pieces from the faience collections can be viewed for free every Saturday at the town hall (check the schedule).
The exhibition is complemented by an interactive video that explains the production techniques and the history of the faience workshops.
From March to the end of October: 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM – 3:00 PM to 5:30 PM.
From November to March: 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM only.

Saturday's market
Every Saturday morning, nearly 100 vendors bring the heart of Thiviers to life. This market, recognized as one of the most beautiful in France (ranked 7th nationally and first in Nouvelle-Aquitaine), is a must-visit. Regardless of the weather, locals gather to shop for the week. The selection is impressive: fresh vegetables, meats, charcuterie, cheeses from cows, goats, and sheep, poultry, local beers, spices, prepared dishes, duck products (magret, foie gras), walnuts, mushrooms, and truffles… everything you need for your culinary needs! It’s also the perfect time to meet local producers and learn about their craft.
Artisans and creators are also present, offering ceramics, soaps, jewelry, and more. You can find unique items or even take advantage of services like knife sharpening.
The market holds a special place in the hearts of Thiviers residents, who gather each week to connect and enjoy local products. Throughout the year, three special themed markets highlight the seasons:
- Christmas Market: featuring a competition for the finest Mélanosporum truffles.
- Epiphany Fair: a contest for the best duck and goose products, with live demonstrations and tastings.
- Candlemas Fair: a must-attend gastronomic event.
